This is land that is very special to me. It is the deep woods of Maine and the Saco River, that begins in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and travels through New Hampshire and Maine, and eventually empties out into the great sea in Saco, Maine.
Eastern Woodland Tribes traveled and lived on these lands. It has been said, that many gathered at the great falls where the following pictures I've taken show this beautiful spot, although touched now too often by hands of men and women who do not treasure this special place - who have such disregard for our Mother, the Earth and the precious waters that give life to all living things.
The people would gather here as they traveled following the salmon. They camped upon the shores of the mighty Saco.
The Saco is a beautiful river. In the winter and into spring, the Great Falls roar as the water cascades downward - onward - flowing with great strength and force.
It is cold and refreshing and how often I have swam in this beautiful river. How often - countless hours I have spent here, alone, enjoying the beauty that surrounds me. It is a peaceful place. It is a place that feels good.
It saddens me and angers me when I come here, and see the trash left behind by those who have no regard for the earth, who think nothing of what they are doing, as they leave their trash behind, or cut down beautiful trees for firewood - killing them, for they are living - when so many of the trees and branches have fallen to the earth, waiting to be taken to burn a fire - to be used to give another form of life and light to all.
This is the place that inspired me to write my words The River. This is the place I will come to again and again until perhaps I am no longer able to come to again. But when my end has arrived, I will be forever more with the mighty Saco...for my heart and spirit are with this mighty river and this land.
May you enjoy these photographs. It is, but a slight look at the tremendous beauty here.
